Though I’m pursuing self-employment online I am still interviewing for jobs. I’ve already picked up a part time event-focused side gig that is fun, pays pretty well, and will only be when I feel like working. However I’m still looking at other opportunities simply because I enjoy the camaraderie of co-workers.
This has led me to a very interesting position where I’m asking myself the following question:
Would it be dumb to work a minimum wage job if you liked other things about it like coworkers, hours, ability to help people, etc.?
I interviewed for another part-time position this morning that I was simply interviewing for because the position intrigued me. It would be in a completely new industry for me but it’s a growing industry. It’s also an area where I would be able to help people and my work would directly impact other people’s lives positively. Add to that the staff at the location were all lovely (I met them all since the interview went well and they asked when I could start after verifying my past employment).
However… the job pays nothing. It’s slightly above minimum wage but not enough for me to even consider it above minimum wage.
This job does tick a lot of the right boxes:
- Directly impacts people’s lives in a positive way
- Lots of new coworkers who are awesome
- Office is close to my home so there would be no commute
- Transitional job for a new industry I’m interested in learning about
- Potential for job growth and additional responsibility
- Perfect part time hours that would gel with other part time job and self-employment goals
Oh wait, except pay. It all sounds great except the pay.
Since I’m debt free from paying off my student loans and have lowered all my expenses, the income from the job would actually be sufficient to cover all my bills. Still, it’s not much and the hourly rate is pathetic.
Considering this is a personal finance blog it feels weird to even consider a job that doesn’t pay well. However I do want to work while I build up my self-employment income online and I do want to work with other people, so the pay is only a small part of the decision. I’m not sure if I should job on the opportunity, skip it and take unemployment to keep looking, or take the job but keep looking and growing the online business.
What would you do? Do you ever take a lower paying job if it fit other areas of what you wanted?
