Friends & Debt Freedom

by Fig on January 15, 2013

A friend from college just announced on Facebook that she is debt free!

How exciting!!

Part of me was excited for her, but a bigger part was incredibly jealous. Even though I’m only $5,000 away from being debt free it feels like it will take forever to get there. I was jealous that she got there first and I have so much further to go.

I also felt very encouraged by her story. We went to the same school, graduated at the same time, and have similar debt loads. I know she is also a Christian who follows Dave Ramsey so we have similar methods of paying off debt (aka faster than a lot of people I know). This made me feel encouraged because if she did it and finished, I know I will soon too.

Generally reading stories about debt freedom make me feel very encouraged. That’s why I listen to the Dave Ramsey show every day. This is my first friend to share her debt freedom story and though I felt conflicted with the jealousy, I was very excited as well. I’d love for everyone I know to be debt free. I bet it’s a wonderful feeling.

I talk with as many people in my real life as I can about taking responsibility and paying down debt. It’s a very important issue for me because I know debt can make people feel very hopeless and scared. Striving for and achieving debt freedom is such a wonderful thing that I do hope everyone I know eventually does it.

One friend is debt free. I know several others who will reach this goal in 2013 as well. I fully plan to be debt free this year as well. 2013 is the year for it too happen for a lot of us!

Congrats to your friend. You are not far behind. I still have over $20K of consumer debt so at least you’re in a better position than I am :)

It’s good that you and your friends talk about this. It’s also good in a way that you are competitive. I wish my friends had this kind of sense when we were younger, we’d all be a lot better off for it now. It just goes to show, that wisdom is priceless.

You’re still doing great though! I can’t wait until I am debt free as well.
