Remember how I posted a long time ago about driving a beater car?
Well, surprise! I’m still driving the same car I started driving back in December of 2012!
I really never ever ever thought the beater I got for free from a friend would last this long. When I got it I was told it might last a week or it might last a month. I fully expected it to fall apart after the first month.
Surprisingly, that thing has lasted me a full year!
It’s hard to explain how useful this car has been to me since I’ve been using it. It’s honestly been a major blessing in my life for many different reasons. Below are some of the benefits of driving a beater.
Top Benefits Of Driving A Beater
- You Stop Caring About Appearance – When you drive a beater you have to stop caring what other people think about your car’s appearance. This can be freeing in a society that is all about appearance and where in certain circles the kind of car you drive matters more than your personality. It’s nice to realize it doesn’t matter what your car looks like as long as it gets you from point A to point B.
- You Save Money On Car Payments – This is the biggest benefit of driving a beater. You can save a ton of money without having a car payment. Instead of paying a few hundred dollars every month to drive a car you only have to take care of gas, insurance, and routine maintenance.
- You Save Money On Car Insurance – Insuring a crappy car that isn’t worth much isn’t as expensive as insuring a new $20,000 car that you owe almost $20K on. Since the replacement value isn’t high you don’t need as much insurance and can save a lot of money in this area.
- You Realize A Car Is About Getting You Places – Driving my beater that looks ugly and doesn’t even have a radio has helped me understand a car’s real purpose is transportation. This is something that I’ve only really grasped since driving this basic junker car. Before I thought about all the bells and whistles of the car and now I realize a car is about completing a function – getting from one place to another.
I’ve learned a lot from driving this beater around for so long. It’s honestly changed my perspective about cars and the expenses surrounding cars.
I can’t say I’ll always be driving one as I do hope to eventually upgrade, but it has been a humbling and educational experience. I highly recommend it for anyone who needs to save money or straighten out there priorities!
