Budgeting When Self Employed

by Fig on April 7, 2010

Right now I’m trying to learn how to be self-employed.

Because I have no clue.

Most of the personal finance blogs I’ve come across are all people with huge salaries (and usually huge debt too). I make way less than they do and I’m self employed. My situation seems so different. I’m definitely learning from those blogs, but I need to find more resources for personal finance when you are self-employed. Like how to budget as a self-employed person.

I never budgeted when I had a salary, and now I’m trying to learn how to budget when I have a fluctuating income. Ah. Hard. I’m googling and browsing and searching for info so I can make this work.

After just a week of tracking my spending, and the spending forced onto me by the needy family, I know I’ve got to make a budget and stick to it. I can’t let this ship sink!

So far I’ve found some helpful resources for budgeting when self employed:

Budgeting on a self-employed or irregular income.

Budgeting and tax advice for the self-employed.

Tips for budgeting when you are self-employed.

Four budgeting tips for the self-employed.

And a three part series on budgeting that I liked:

How To Make a Budget (1)

How To Budget With Irregular Income (2)

Best Budgeting Tools (3)

Now I’m off to read through these again and make my own budget!
